The lore: "The ballerina as a jewellery motif dates to the Belle Époque, when Parisian jewellers began immortalising dancers from the Paris Opéra in gold and enamel. But the real story is in the shoes. Pointe shoes have been worn since the early 1800s, when dancers first began performing on their toes to create the illusion of weightlessness — each pair lasting only 12 to 20 hours before breaking down, broken in by hand, ribbons sewn personally before every performance. Degas painted over 700 ballet works not for the glamour but for the paradox: the most effortless-looking art is built on the most punishing devotion. These two charms together say exactly that — the grace you see is the work you don't."
